Handicrafts and Arts – African handicrafts and arts sales – fair trade mission.

askerasmus African Gifts and Handicrafts- engages in fair trade gifts and handicrafts trading throughout the world. We deal in wide range of African wood products mainly from African artisans direct from our workshops and in partnership with other artisans. Preserving the cultural identity of Africa and improving human life of artisans and those we work with through fair trade commitment, is the objective of askerasmus Gifts & Handicraft.

Mission

- to promote the varied talents of artisans from Africa in a way that preserves their true cultural identities / heritage

TITLE: King Enthroned I
ETHNIC GROUP: Northerners
COUNTRY: Ghana

IMPORTANCE / SIGNIFICANCE/HISTORY/STORY BEHIND THE MASK:

This is an intricate motif embossed in aluminum crisscrossed at the forehead and the cheeks of a wise countenance, carved out of a single piece of ‘sese’ wood, have a very smooth finish on it to portray a newly enthroned king. The mask was made according to traditional style of kings in the northern region of Ghana. It’s such a beautiful piece of art that you will like to have hanged on the wall of your home to add natural beauty and color to the room decor. It is believed to infuse strength, wisdom and love to the owner.

MEDIA: The mask is hand carved from ‘sese’ wood - a wood common in West Africa and aluminum.

LOCATION/FLAG:
There are ten regions namely the Northern, Upper West, Upper East, Volta, Ashanti, Western, Eastern, Central, Brong - Ahafo and Greater Accra.

The Northerners, as the name implies, are located in the northern part of Ghana. Upper West and Upper East regions are included in this grouping with Bolgatanga and Tamale as major cities. The Ethnic groupings include Frafra, Mossi, Dagomba, Mamprusi, Nanumba, Gurunsi, Kasena among others. Similar groupings like Winiama, Nuna, Bwa and Lobi are found in neighboring countries like Borkina Faso, Ivory Coast, Togo, Mali etc.

Ghana is located in West Africa near the equator and on the Greenwich meridian. It is bounded on the north and northwest by Burkina Faso, on the east by Togo, on the south by the Atlantic Ocean, and on the west by La Cote D'Ivoire (known as the Ivory Coast). Ghana’s total area is 238,537 sq. km (92,100 sq. miles). Its capital city is Accra. Other notable cities are Tema, Tamale, Cape Coast, and Secondi-Takoradi. The terrain is composed of plains and scrubland, rain forest and savanna. Ghana has a tropical climate and has a population of about 18million (estimated in 2000)
